FRIDAY AUGUST 5 – 7:30
Fresh off a month long tour of New Zealand, guitarist, storyteller, and humorist Richard Gilewitz brings to life a platter of rousing tunes, tales, and twitters filled with 6 and 12-string chops. As Richard incorporates his own quirky personality and orchestration into a sound tunnel of timeless musical history, he takes his audience on an excursion filled with colorful imagery of samples from European, Contemporary, and Spanish Classical works to the Traditional, Folk, Blues, and American Primitive eras. “Acoustic Adventures” is a journey into the past and present realm of guitar that has received standing ovations around the globe from the Erupt Festival New Zealand, Garter Lane Arts Centre in Ireland, the Ipswich Center in Australia to the Kravis Performing Arts Center in the United States.
“A powerhouse of eclectic guitar styles and genres, Gilewitz wears his influences well.” 20th Century Guitar Magazine
Charming his listeners with a mixture of tunes peppered with stories about the folks and events that have influenced acoustic guitar music and insights into life itself, Richard speaks through his guitar as a master of moods who is always at the service of his inner voice. Named as one of the “Men of Steel” by Fingerstyle Guitar Magazine, Richard continues to fascinate his audiences with fingerstyle gymnastics while spinning yarns too unbelievable not to be true. Spanning across a career of over 4 decades of well-honed technique and 30 years on the road touring worldwide, his signature sound has been captured on his seven releases, performance and instructional DVDs, and his songbooks.
“…his concerts are like a nice, iced chai latte: smooth, cool, but with plenty of spice.” Entertain Me, Cheri Harris, Chronicle
It is his live shows that bring out the best in this internationally known song writer, performer and recording artist who follows a distinct cadence that creates a glow that continually grows a little brighter with each tune. Whether he is performing solo, conducting guitar seminars and school programs, or sharing the stage with folks such as The California Guitar Trio, John McCutcheon, John Renbourn, Mose Allison, the late John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Norman Blake, Indigo Girls, John Hammond, Rory Block, or Jane Siberry, Richard Gilewitz always creates a sparkle of wit and wonderment.
“…ear-boggling…where technical precision meets sheer passion for the instrument.” Washington Post
“Similar to like-minded souls Jorma Kaukonen, John Fahey and Sandy Bull, Gilewitz’s acoustic magic works best in a live setting.” Scott Verrastro, NASHVILLE
Richard Gilewitz will be performing on the main stage at the fair on Friday evening, August 5th. There is no additional admission charge for this special event! Bring the family and enjoy a night of great music, food and fun at the Monroe County Fair.
… it’s simply amazing that they were created by two hands dancing across a set of wires. Gilewitz’s own compositions stand beside those by Elizabeth Cotton, John Fahey and J.S. Bach for an entertaining set that is testament to the Floridian’s phenomenal talents. Curtis Ross, Tampa Tribune
“Richard Gilewitz ‘s playing is faultless, the production as clear as a pinged champagne glass.” SeeLife Magazine, Brighton UK
“Gilewitz 60+ minute set featured some of the finest live guitar that I have heard in a long time.” Dave “Doc” Piltz, Blues on Stage.
