Monroe County Fair Wins Agricultural Award

The Monroe County Fair was awarded an Agricultural Awareness award from the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs at the State Association’s annual convention held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.  The award was presented on Sunday, January 20, 2008 during the awards banquet and was given to the fair for having an outstanding agricultural education exhibit at the 2007 fair.  The award is given yearly to a New York State county fair whose “Agriculture is Everywhere” exhibit is considered by the New York State Association’s Agricultural Awareness Committee to be above and beyond
the norm.

The exhibit included interactive activities for families that involved making canola oil, examining seeds under a microscope, designing packages for products and identifying “good” versus “bad” germs.  However, according to Fran Tepper, Executive Director of the Monroe County Fair and Recreation Association, the activity that caught the attention of the Agricultural Awareness Committee was the lady bug exhibit that demonstrated integrated pest management.  Each child was given a lady bug to take home.

The “Agriculture is Everywhere” exhibit will be a part of future Monroe County Fairs with new activities added each year.  The 2008 Monroe County fair is slated for July 9-13.
